An aqualung is an underwater breathing
apparatus worn by divers. It was developed
in the early 1940s. Compressed air cylinders
strapped to the diver's back are regulated
by a valve system and by a mouth tube to
provide air to the diver at the same
pressure as that of the surrounding water
(which increases with the depth). The vital
component of an aqualung is the
demand-regulator, a two-stage valve in the
diver's mouthpiece. When the diver breathes
in, air first passes from the compressed-air
cylinders through a valve to the inner
chamber of the mouthpiece. There, water that
has entered the outer chamber pressurizes
the air to the surrounding pressure before
the diver takes in the air.
